Today we return to my first love, well, except for her proofreading this for me 😉, IoT, or the Internet of Things. This time, though, we are giving it a hearty injection of AI. No needles required.
Artificial intelligence used to conjure up images of vast data centres and cloud-based supercomputers, but there is a quieter revolution happening much closer to home. These days, the real action is on the gadgets we carry, wear, and (occasionally) lose down the back of the sofa. Edge computing, which is just a fancy way of saying 'let's process data locally instead of sending it on a world tour', is teaming up with AI to make our devices faster, more private, and a good deal more resilient. Whether it's your phone recognising your face in a blink or industrial sensors spotting trouble before it starts, AI at the edge is quietly changing the way machines see and react to the world. Chipmakers are now in a race to cram more power into ever-tinier, more energy-efficient hardware. So the real question is not if AI will move to the edge, but just how quickly and how much it will shake things up.
But before we get too carried away, let's see what the internet has coughed up for us this week. Spoiler: it's not just cat videos.
