Dear Sentinels

Black October really lived up to its name. In just a few hectic weeks of October 2026, AI tools dug up some rather alarming vulnerabilities in the software that quietly keeps the internet ticking along: PHP, Node.js, GitLab, Plex, and so on. Meanwhile, hackers armed with AI were having a field day, breaking into systems that had seemed solid for years. One particularly thrifty attacker managed to breach over a hundred companies, apparently for less than the price of a decent sandwich per target. The real showstopper came courtesy of PHP. Two security teams, both using cutting-edge AI models and working independently, found a pair of remote-code-execution bugs that had been hiding in PHP’s core for over a decade. These bugs, dubbed PHP2Shell, were so serious that governments and companies around the world yanked services offline rather than risk leaving the digital front door wide open for anyone with the right AI toolkit.

What made Black October especially unnerving wasn’t just the sheer number of things AI uncovered, but how quickly finding a bug turned into exploiting it. The same AI that helped researchers spot decade-old flaws also let hackers turn up new ones and put them to use almost immediately. This double-edged sword isn’t just a problem for security researchers, either. Over at Meta, for example, they’ve quietly let an AI loose on their code review process. It’s not making headlines, but it is fixing reviewer comments and catching mistakes before they go live, saving engineers a fair bit of time (and probably a few headaches). When you look at both stories side by side, it’s really about the same thing: what happens when software development starts moving at AI speed, for better or worse.
